Nonhle Mbuthuma

South Africa

Harassed for defending her ancestral land

Nonhle Mbuthuma is part of the Amadiba indigenous people in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. She’s leading a fight for her community against a mining company which wants to mine titanium on their ancestral land. Around 5,000 people may be forcibly evicted if the company is allowed to mine the land. Nonhle founded the Amadiba Crisis Committee to unite villagers to push back. She has been continually intimidated and threatened and even survived an attempt to kill her.
