Killed for fearlessly defending others

Marielle Franco was a city councillor in Rio de Janeiro. She always stood up for the rights of black women, LGBTI and young people. She also condemned unlawful killings by the police. On 14 March 2018, Marielle was shot to death in a car. In 2017, there were at least 70 human rights defenders were killed in Brazil. These cases usually are not investigated and those responsible go free.
